The Healing Colors of the Rainbow

This past October I had the honour of teaching Mimi The Angel™ Presents Healing Colours of The Rainbow at the Rama Lotus Yoga Centre. Little angels and their parents had fun discovering the seven major chakras through yoga, meditation and activities. The word “chakra” means “wheel” in Sanskrit and are energy centres that bring energy in and out of our body for wellness, healing and vitality. There are seven major chakras each representing a different colour of the rainbow and which governs certains organs and corresponding emotions. Understanding the chakra system facilitates awareness and healing. In a two-part series, I will be sharing with you the basics of the chakra system along with activities for you and your little angels to follow to maintain balance and wellbeing. Today’s column discussing the first four chakras.

Rituals for Your Little Angels

During the holiday season, I noticed how many roles that ritual play in our lives. The rituals associated with major life events, such as births, marriages or graduations help to punctuate our lives. Rituals are associated with rites of passage, and provide an opportunity to gather and celebrate with our families. They are coloured by our beliefs and values and differ according to our faith. However, just as routines help to make life more predictable, simple rituals can help children to adapt and to deal with difficult circumstances. Sometimes the small rituals are just as important as the bigger ones, as they help children find ways of coping with daily life.

Dr. Annie Lamonde, Ph.D. is a psychologist who works with children and families in a mental health agency for Francophone’s in the Ottawa region. She would like to hear from the readers on topics they would like to see discussed in the newsletter. However, because of the format of the newsletter, it is not possible for her to answer specific questions related to problems that might be experienced by the readers, since the material provided in this newsletter is not intended to replace professional advice. When consulting with a psychologist, he or she will collaborate with the client to review the history of the problem and its current impact on the individual or the family before implementing a treatment plan. This cannot be done within the framework of a newsletter.

Be a Healthy Role Model for Your Little Angels!

As a parent, you are a primary role model for your children with your every word, behaviour, deed and action. As they watch and listen for your guidance and approval, they learn what is to become the beliefs and habits they will live by for a lifetime. When it comes to healthy eating and positive living habits, it is no different than anything else. You’re probably great at ensuring your kids do their homework, learn to read and write and do their multiplication tables properly. But what about healthy eating habits and positive life skills? Equally important, these all start within the home. What follows are some things to consider in how you can impact the lifelong health and happiness of your little angels through the food and lifestyle habits and behaviours that you are modeling for your children.

Emotional Resolution for Your Little Angel!

Our children are struggling to be understood. Did you know that your little Angel is also a little sponge? Childhood is the period of life that contains the most changes and the period of life where the most learning occurs. We are taught, as parents, to look after our children’s every need. We are expected to stimulate their intellects, to nourish their little bodies, and to guide them in all areas of life…most importantly, their emotional life. But do we really have the tools to do this sacred job effectively?

Bullying! A Young Indigo’s Perspective

Bullying is no laughing matter. Every day, children, teens and even adults get harassed. I see it at school all the time. What would you do if you are victim of bullying? What would you tell your little angel to do? Would you tell someone or handle it yourself? These are the questions kids face when they are bullied. I asked this of my school resource office and this is what he had to say:

Scheduling Your Little Angel for New Mothers

As a registered nurse at Almonte Hospital and mother of 6 children (soon to be seven!) scheduling is a tool as well as a blessing that allows parents to manage their lives. Working with new mothers at the hospital, a schedule puts the parents in control and paves the way for a structured household. Your infant is busy learning many new things during those first weeks of life. We are all creatures of habit, and like us, infants learn from repetition and consistency. This is not to say that flexibility is not important but it should be introduced only when a consistent schedule has been established.
